Today we worked with the seventh graders on two super fun tasks! The first was a “crack the code” where the kids had to solve a series of clues to crack a case. The clues involved reading and math. Then they had to complete a STEM challenge (building a bridge or a tower) all in 60 minutes. Then students worked on a math mystery where they were solving word problems, equations, skip counting, and using place value knowledge. It was a fun day!

On Wednesday we celebrated the kindergarten readers! A grade 2 standard is that students will digitally publish their writing. I introduced google docs and students have started typing one of their small moment stories that they would like to publish. Once they are typed we will go back and add a few more details to strengthen them up. Students are more apt to make their stories stronger when they’re typed as they don’t need to erase and re-write. I am hoping to incorporate some "Learning to Type" time into our re-teach block, as typing is an important skill that often isn't taught anymore. I am just trying to find the right program we can use on our chromebooks! In math our measuring unit is underway! Students continue to explore base ten concepts and models within 1,000. This unit is supporting students’ developing strategies for counting, measurement, and double-digit computation through the use of mathematical models including counters, base ten area pieces, and the number line. One of the key strategies developed in this unit is decomposition, or the ability to break numbers into their component parts. This is preparing us for the splitting strategy that will be taught in unit 3. The students did some descriptive and persuasive writing, and the stories turned out GREAT! Students needed to try and sell a haunted house, which normally would scare someone away with all its spooky elements! Students put a positive twist on scary things to convince someone to buy their house. For example, fall down and get hurt? Good thing there's a skeleton living there to get some spare bones and a zombie for some stitches. They are sure to fix up your "boo boos!" Don't mind the witches in the kitchen, they make great cooks and will even let you borrow their cauldron to make soup. The mummy in the bathroom...he's just there so you never run out of toilet paper! Stop by our hallway to see the students' writing and art work!
Raven has done so much for us and our school. Saying goodbye to him was a bittersweet day! |
