Today we completed two activities to get more practice with science processes. We practiced observing, predicting, and recording. See below for pictures from today, as well as a copy of the lab report we have been working on.

Today in reading we learned that readers use strategies to check themselves and fix their mistakes as they read. I shared a story of telling a joke that backfired because I misread the punch line. Question: How do you know when it’s raining cats and dogs? Answer: When you step into a puddle! VS Question: How do you know when it’s raining cats and dogs? Answer: When you step into a poodle We then talked about how readers don’t wait for someone else to catch their mistakes. They don’t wait for someone else to check them. Instead, they check themselves. They stop as soon as something doesn’t seem right and fix it up. Students then worked in partners and read jokes to each other, practicing so that they can fix their own mistake and get the laugh. Today in science we had a great discussion about what science is and who scientists are. Students made word webs and some of their words were: Science is...
A scientist is....
We then did a simple investigation that allowed us to practice some of the things that scientists do (which included taking notes!). We practiced:
In science last week we were engineers who had to work together to design and build a model water slide that met certain criteria. Our goal is to read for 30 uninterrupted minutes. So far we’ve done 7! Eighth graders Asher and Quinn came to our room to help us come up with ways to teach the whole school about Respect (one of our seven code of character traits) at Friday's school-wide pep rally. The second graders decided to do two different things to teach the school -- a song/dance and skits. Watch what they came up with below. Last week we went outside to practice working as a team. Here are some quick videos of this in action. |
