Enjoy these pictures from the first few days of school. Sorry many are sideways! For some reason every time I went to turn them my computer froze! Hopefully next time I upload some pictures I won't have this problem.

Ms. Morales came in to teach the lesson during our literacy block. She taught us about Fluency! Today we specifically focused on 2 of the 5 elements of fluency -- phrasing and accuracy. Here are some BIG ideas you should know about fluency and why we are teaching students how to become more fluent readers! 1. Fluency gets better the more learners read the same text. 2. Fluency will be a struggle if the text is too difficult. A huge part of fluency is being able to read the words automatically and accurately. If the words are too difficult, fluency will be compromised. If you want to really zero in on fluency, find a text that is almost too easy. This takes the brain off figuring out the words and on to fluency. 3. The ultimate goal of fluency is better comprehension. Incorrect phrasing and a slow rate of speed can impede comprehension, especially as texts get longer. Students will work on fluency throughout the year. We even have a fluency center during our Reader's Workshop time. Ms. Morales taught us how to "scoop" our words while we read. Instead of pointing to each word, readers are encouraged to “scoop” their finger under groups of words to form phrases within the sentence. Scooping phrases works so well because students are visually reading, orally speaking, and physically touching all at the same time! |
