Today was the 100th day of school! We started the day with a share (some of us brought in a collection of 100 things). Then we did some creative writing titled, "If I was 100." After PE we had snack and decorated some crowns. For literacy we watched a short animated story that counted up to the 100th day. Then we finished our writing task for our class book titled, "When We Are 100." For math we did some math games around the number 100 and practiced making predictions and estimating. We ended the day with a team-building activity. The challenge was to build a tower as tall as they could using 100 marshmallows and 100 toothpicks. Students have been exploring measurement concepts, discovering that the size of the unit of measurement impacts the number of units necessary to measure a given object. They've considered three related units of measurement -- inches, feet, and yards. They have also solved problems related to non-standard units. We did some work with basic rations to lay the foundation for multiplicative comparison and proportional reasoning that will be expected in later grades. We also got to see how tall we would be as giants (double our height!!). When books get longer, it’s easy to lose track of the story -- sometimes without even realizing it! It helps to have strategies for keeping track of the whole story. One strategy is reading with same-book partners! Reading the same books as a partner can help readers talk, clarify, and ask questions to better understand the books they are reading. Another strategy is that as books become longer and more complex, readers jot down notes on Post-its to keep track of the story and remember the important things that happen. |
