- Was she eaten by a shark that didn't chew?
- Is she lost in a video game?
- Did she rob a bank and go into hiding?
- Did she join the circus?
- Was she kidnapped by cavemen when she traveled back to the dinosaur era?
- Or was she never really even a teacher...she was undercover the whole time?

In our classroom we use a combination of Words Their Way and Fundations. For our spelling, students do not memorize "spelling words" but rather understand more about what makes up the different parts of each word. They learn to connect words that are similiar and use entry words to help them. Through both of these programs children work on reading fluency, spelling, writing and vocabulary.
Becoming literate is dependent on fast, accurate recognition of words and their meanings in texts, and fast, accurate production of words in writing so that readers and writers can focus their attention on making meaning. Through active exploration, word study teaches students to examine words to discover generalizations about English spelling. They learn the regularities, patterns, and conventions needed to read and spell. Word study is developmental. We must teach where the child "is at.” On the weekly spelling test, students will be tested on their assigned list as well as up to ten additional words that the students have not practiced at home. This allows me to see the student's ability to manipulate and apply new sounds to create different words I haven't been able to post pictures in a while because I was waiting for a new camera cord. Well, it finally came! So here are some pictures from the first three weeks of second grade. No...I didn't really fry it! But we have been talking a lot about pushing our thinking. It really goes with a favorite word in our class...PERSEVERE! We always talk about how even when our brains and our bodies are tired, we must keep going. We also talk about how everyone has room for growth. We are all good at something, but no one is good at everything.
During the day we do a lot of brain warm-ups. These are different than a brain break in that, instead of giving our brains a break, we are warming them up. We are warming them up to push our thinking. At the start of each math lesson, for example, we warm up our brains with some fluency practice. Then, when it comes time for me to teach the new concept (this is called concept development), I tell the students that I want them to push their thinking. Today the students worked so hard, that one student said to me with a smile, "Miss Lacharite, your fried my brain!" I consider today another successful day! :) Homework starts this week! I sent home the homework policies, but a few students forgot to take their home-school folders home with them. Friday ended a little bit crazy! You can find the policies at the bottom of this post. I have some pictures from last week that will be uploaded as soon as my new camera cord comes in. I am looking forward to this week, which will be another busy week full of new learning.
Week 2 is well underway, and yet again it is going to be very busy! Although we are still practicing classroom routines and expectations, we are also beginning to focus on content. Today we reviewed number bonds in math (ask your student to show you one!) and I started giving some literacy assessments so that next week we can start reading groups (hopefully!).
I will keep you posted about homework. Students will not be getting homework this week. It is either going to start next week or the week after. Last week and this week second graders will be practicing persevering. We have talked a lot about how even when our brains and our bodies are tired, we must keep going. We must always persevere and try our best! It's one of the class rules that we came up with together.
I have most of the permission slips back so I am able to post some pictures. We were so busy again today that I forgot to take many pictures. Below you will find a few of some of the activities that we did. Ask your kids what their favorite part was. I bet many will say the brain breaks! |
