Today we rehearsed our code of character presentation, sorted our beetle glyphs with Venn diagrams, and created our idea notebooks for writers workshop. We made the notebooks with the laser engraver! So cool!

This morning we started Reader's Workshop by learning that there's two ways to read a book -- you can read the words or read the pictures. Reading the pictures is helpful when the book is a bit challenging for us and we don't know all the words. Then we practiced our reading stamina. We were able to read for 5 minutes before we got off task. Our goal is to make it to 30 minutes! For math we made glyphs. We learned that a glyph is a way to represent information using pictures or symbols. In order to interpret the glyph, however, you need to read a key (also called a legend). We used these beetle glyphs to learn more about each other and will do more math with them throughout the week! In the afternoon we had a fundraising assembly and then did another team-building activity for science. Students worked in pairs to "Save Fred." Ask your child what they did! We then ended the day with guidance with Ms. Christine. Thursday was another busy day in second grade! We started the morning with a paper chain challenge. Using TWO sheets of paper and 12 inches of tape, the goal was to make the longest paper chain you could. Through completing this challenge students learned that sharing ideas is great! You should never get upset when someone wants to use/borrow your idea. Instead, you should feel honored. And when we build upon each other's ideas, greater things happen! This activity led into us developing our classroom rules. Classroom rules are necessary so that we can feel safe and happy. Next we continued to learn about each other by making a classroom book "Taco 'Bout a Cool Class!" We also walked around the room and learned about each other with a game of "Find Somebody Who.." BINGO. In the afternoon we read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. This book teaches us that when you face difficult problems and challenges, it is important to have a growth mindset. Having a growth mindset means you understand that the brain is like a muscle because it gets stronger with practice. The more you practice, the better you will get. After we read this book the challenge was to use a growth mindset to build the tallest tower you could out of dot stickers and index cards. We then reflected on our results and came up with a plan to improve our designs. We ended the day coming up with a plan to teach the whole school about RESPECT. We have seven code of character traits our school follows and we will learn about all of them at a school-wide assembly next week.
On Friday, May 31 MES hosted a Makerfaire. Thanks to a grant secured from the VT Lottery and the Agency of Education, Montgomery Elementary was able to purchase A LOT of new technology. We have acquired:
Students were introduced to most of this technology at the Makerfaire. We had students split into groups. They got to interact with the technology and also got to complete various design challenges. The students were amazing problem solvers and engineers. The excitement in the room cannot even be described! We have plans next year to use this technology to enhance the nature trails surrounding our school, so next year be in the look out for even more information! In the meantime, check out all of the pictures from this AWESOME day below: OR, CLICK HERE for an easier viewing experience!
