Next week we will start academics. I am really looking forward to it!
This morning we made a class book that tells "All About Us." After that we went outside to do some Team Building Activities. It was a lot of fun and the kids saw how much easier it was to accomplish a goal when they worked as a team and listened to each other. They also learned the importance of compromising. I have some great videos and pictures I can't wait to share!! We ended the day at the rec center for lunch and recess with first grade.

I'm still waiting for forms to be returned so that I can add some pictures from the first couple of days.
Today we continued to get to know each other and learn classroom rules and procedures. First thing this morning we made our classroom rules. To introduce the rule-making activity we read a fun book called If Everybody Did. If you drop just one piece of trash and don't pick it up, it’s no big deal ... right? But what if everybody did that? What if everybody broke the rules ... and spoke during story time, didn’t wash up, or splashed too much at the sink? Then the world would be a mess. But what if everybody obeyed the rules so that the world would become a better place? We then played a fun board game to learn more about each other and were introduced to partner cards, which is a fun way to be paired up with a partner. We finished the morning by starting our Second Grade Memory Books. After lunch we worked on our Hopes and Dreams and ended the day working with two eighth grade students to plan out how we will teach the school about "Respect" out next week's school-wide pep rally. It was another busy day in second grade!! Please note that I have LOTS of pictures from the first day, but won't post them until I receive all photo permission forms back. What a great first day of school!! The students worked so hard and were so respectful. I can already tell that we are going to have a FANTASTIC year! We started the day learning our morning routine, which includes Morning Meeting. Morning meeting is a message (from me), a greeting, a share, and an activity. It helps to build a positive classroom community of learners. After morning meeting we did a quick read aloud and a few rounds of "Would You Rather?" Some of the silly questions from this game were:
I enjoyed hearing the students' reasoning for their choices. And then, as I'm sure you heard from your now-second-grader, we spent the morning outside for recess rodeo and.....IT WAS HOT!! But despite the heat, the students did a great job listening to all the rules of the playground. After a delicious BBQ lunch and a morning spent in the heat, we took it easy in the classroom, sharing what we did over our summer vacation by creating some "Snapshots of Summer." The first few days of school are all about learning routines and procedures and getting to know each other. Next week we will begin academics.
