Becoming literate is dependent on fast, accurate recognition of words and their meanings in texts, and fast, accurate production of words in writing so that readers and writers can focus their attention on making meaning.
Through active exploration, word study teaches students to examine words to discover generalizations about English spelling. They learn the regularities, patterns, and conventions needed to read and spell.
Word study is developmental. We must teach where the child "is at.”
On the weekly spelling test, students will be tested on their assigned list as well as up to ten additional words that the students have not practiced at home. This allows me to see the student's ability to manipulate and apply new sounds to create different words
