Unit 2 (which we are currently working on) is all about using place value strategies to solve equations. Students were taught expanded form, open number lines, hundreds charts, and the traditional algorithm. Some students have even combined strategies to make strategies work better for them! We have begun to look at regrouping, but with the traditional algorithm we have not yet moved on to 3 digit numbers. I want students to have a strong understanding of what it means to "borrow" and "regroup." I don't want them to put a 1 next to a number in the tens place and have no idea why they are doing that. No one strategy is expected to be mastered yet. Mastery with double digit addition and subtraction is not expected until the end of the year.
We will end unit 2 in time for vacation. For this unit, the mastery that is expected, is with adding and subtracting multiples of 10 or 100.
Unit 3 has us learning about measurement and applying our addition and subtraction strategies to length units.
