Bees are a great way to show the interdependent relationship between plants and animals! The bees need the flowers for food, while the flower needs the bee to reproduce. We had a great discussion about why plants are so important and then we went outside to model how pollination works.
The students were the worker bees (which we learned are the female bees). They flew from their hive to go collect nectar from a field of flowers (starburst). As they were collecting nectar, they also got pollen (cheetos) from the stamen. As they flew back to their hive, they landed on more flowers (white bowls). At the end of the activity, we saw just how much pollen these bees were able to spread, all from landing on just one flower to collect nectar.
