Most of the day was spent doing "Recess Rodeo," which is when the kids learn all the rules for recess time and get to practice each of the games (there are 10 all together). Thankfully we had good weather, although it did get HOT!
Even though most of the day was spent doing recess rodeo, we did get to fit in a few other things. Here's what we did:
- Read two stories -- You're Finally Here! and First Day Jitters (ask your child what was the surprise at the end of this book)
- Writing activity. This was based on the book First Day Jitters and was my first look at each student's writing.
- A couple shares so that we could learn more about each other. One involved 3 m&m's.
- Some free choice time to explore the classroom games.
We had a lot to do today, and we have even more to do tomorrow. Tomorrow we are really going to start learning and practicing classroom expectations and routines. We will have the whole day in our classroom. We will also work on our hopes and dreams and continue to learn more about each other. This first week is all about community building and establishing a safe classroom, not academics. That will start next week. :)
I took some pictures today, but won't post them until I have more permission slips back.
