We started the morning off with a fire drill. We needed a few reminders to be quiet, especially when returning to the building, but overall it went really well. After the fire drill I started to pull kids for a reading assessment. I am eager to start academics next week, and I think the kids are too. They keep asking when we are going to do math and reading. I only made it through 3 kids, so I will have to continue next week. We probably won't start reading groups next week. Instead I will introduce all of the components of our literacy block (there are 5) and we will work on establishing a routine. While I pulled kids for the assessment they finished their "All About Me" minions and read in the classroom library. Then our new guidance teacher, Mrs. Nyland-Funke came in to do a guidance lesson. After that we did a read-aloud and activity about how "It's Okay to be OK" and "Everyone is good at something, but no one is good at everything." After lunch we practiced logging on to the computers and getting in to our GoogleDrive accounts. We use these accounts for writing. Logging in the first few times takes a REALLLLLY long time. But with practice the kids get great at it and the time is cut down significantly. After that the students got to play computer games for a few minutes (this also allowed me to make sure the flash was working on all the computers for next week's reading assessment). We ended the day again going outside with kindergarten and first grade. I told the kids to rest up this weekend because with academics starting next week, we won't be ending each day outside.
I look forward to settling in to a more normal and consistent routine. I have so much planned and I can't wait to get to know your child as a learner.
