Thursday was another busy day in second grade! We started the morning with a paper chain challenge. Using TWO sheets of paper and 12 inches of tape, the goal was to make the longest paper chain you could. Through completing this challenge students learned that sharing ideas is great! You should never get upset when someone wants to use/borrow your idea. Instead, you should feel honored. And when we build upon each other's ideas, greater things happen! This activity led into us developing our classroom rules. Classroom rules are necessary so that we can feel safe and happy. Next we continued to learn about each other by making a classroom book "Taco 'Bout a Cool Class!" We also walked around the room and learned about each other with a game of "Find Somebody Who.." BINGO. In the afternoon we read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds. This book teaches us that when you face difficult problems and challenges, it is important to have a growth mindset. Having a growth mindset means you understand that the brain is like a muscle because it gets stronger with practice. The more you practice, the better you will get. After we read this book the challenge was to use a growth mindset to build the tallest tower you could out of dot stickers and index cards. We then reflected on our results and came up with a plan to improve our designs. We ended the day coming up with a plan to teach the whole school about RESPECT. We have seven code of character traits our school follows and we will learn about all of them at a school-wide assembly next week.
