We started the day with morning meeting. We greeted each other with a handshake. The we shared one thing we did over the summer. Sharing just one thing was hard! But I assured everyone they'd have more time to share in the afternoon. Our morning meeting activity was called Zoom. Zoom starts by a student turning to the person next to them and saying, “ZOOM!” That student turns to the next student and says “ZOOM!” This continues around the circle with the goal being to keep “ZOOM” going as fast as you can. Once we get really good at the game we try to make ZOOM go in two directions which is a challenge, but it can be done! After morning meeting it was on to recess rodeo! We learned the rules of the playground and how to play all the different games. The whole school then had a BBQ lunch together and played! In the afternoon we had some time to talk to each other and create a project to share with the school what we did over the summer. Then we enjoyed some freeze pops followed by a team-building challenge. The challenge was called String Lifter. This activity (as well as some others we will complete later in the week) are a great way to build classroom community and teamwork at the beginning of the year. Sometimes challenges can turn into a classroom competition where students and groups are competing against each other. While classroom competitions can be fun, my goal, especially in the beginning of the year, is to encourage a growth mindset in students. Thus, rather than having students compare their results against each other, they compare the results of their personal attempts. Another one of the great things about team building exercises is that it allows for trial and error and multiple opportunities to fail forward! | |
